Abstract [EN]
The high performance computing landscape is changing rapidly as AI pushes hardware and software environments to be more diverse. At the user level, HPC applications are more complex than ever, and users increasingly need to integrate traditional simulations with AI frameworks like PyTorch and JAX, large-scale distributed workflows, and agentic systems. At the facility level, the traditional HPC system stack is being augmented with containerization, distributed services, exotic accelerators, and acute demand for more infrastructure flexibility.
Todd will offer a perspective on HPC software challenges through the lens of LLNL’s Livermore Computing facility. He’ll start with some history on LLNL, the evolution of its machines, and how Spack evolved to deal with software complexity during the Exascale Computing Project. Todd will talk about how system and user software stacks must change to support demand for new workloads as HPC centers converge with clouds and hyperscalers.
